Essential Oils and Your Animals

Are essential oils for animals safe? The answer is YES!!! But you must know which oils are safe and how to use them to keep your animal friends safe.

I will discuss different oils, how they are used and how they support your animals.
Animals are different from humans in the way they respond to essential oils. The animals considered in my blog will be mostly domesticated animals that are small or medium in size. For example, dogs, cats, horses, birds, reptiles, etc.

Animals have a very sensitive sense of smell. Therefore, an oil that is good for your animal may not be the same oil that is good for my animal. Each animal must discern which oil is best for them. And believe me, your animal will tell you if you are using the wrong oil for them!

Determining the correct amount of oil to use is essential. I always use the “less is more” approach. Our household pets are much smaller than their human companions and we must be considerate of their size. Oils can be diluted at first in order to observe the animal’s reaction to an oil. There are several good carrier oils: coconut, flax, olive, etc. If you apply an oil directly onto the skin of an animal and they are reactive (won’t sit still, whining), then apply a carrier oil right away and that will soothe the skin where the oil is located.

In March, we will talk about one way to get your animal to help you choose the correct oil for them!
